大都市では多くの物事が消費され続けている。ニューヨークのチャイナタウンでも毎日同じ日常が止まることなく繰り返されていた。道にはたくさんの店が並び同じ物を行っている。ある日、一軒のお土産物店で働く女性に話しかけてみた。その店はチャイナタウンに通う中で度々立ち寄るようになった店で、女性も私のことを覚えているようだった。はじめは商売以外の話はしてくれなかったが、少しずついろいろな話をしてくれた。彼女の家族はニューヨークにいるが、親戚は中国にいること。国に帰ることはとても難しいということ。その話をしている彼女の表情は、ニューヨークで気丈に生きているいつもの表情とは違って優しく見えた。ニューヨークには様々な国の移民が多く住んでおり、彼らの生活はこの街のいたるところに散りばめられ、ここでの歴史を積み上げていた。彼らの日常は消費されるように過ぎ去っていたが、この街に彩りも与えていた。

New York is home to many immigrants from different nations, and their lives are scattered throughout the city, building up its history. Their daily lives had passed away just like being consumed, but they also added color to the city.
